1994 Ducati 916
This bike caused a sensation when it first appeared in 1994. People stopped and stared, and such was the demand for it that a registered secondhand machine could be sold for more than the new list price. Its function as a pure race machine was never in doubt, though its striking looks meant it became the most desirable machine of the decade. Even now, six years later, only the MV Augusta 750cc could claim to compete in looks. The success of Carl Fogarty (WSB champion in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999) and others (including Troy Corser, WSB champion in 1996) have proved that it is like none of the Japanese bikes. It dominated the domestic championships in the UK and USA in 1999. Experienced owners and testers all concur that its handling has no peer, the stiff chassis providing the most amazing feedback and stability in corners, while the droning engine catapulting the rider from one apex to the next.
This machine has been designed as a race winner first, and a road bike second, an impression which is reinforced if you ever have the chance to sit on it. The riding position is one of the most uncomfortable around, but complaining about comfort is to miss the point. It's the motorcycle as art as well as science.
